A nine-year-old singer drew the praise of atheists online when she replaced the "God" with "please" when she sang the national anthem at a Canada Day celebration.
The young girl, who was identified only by her first name "Selaena," appears in a video posted by her father, a man with the username "Austin Hayward," as she sings the anthem during a celebration in Dutton, Ont.
Selaena's performance drew plenty of praise in the video's comment section. Some users said they would be happy to see the words changed that way permanently, while others lauded her father for not indoctrinating her.
This isn't the first time that people have tried to change the words to "O Canada." Last year, prominent Canadians including author Margaret Atwood and former prime minister Kim Campbell promoted an effort to change the lyrics "all thy sons command" to "all of us command," to make them more gender-neutral.
And in the 2010 Throne Speech, the governing Conservatives announced plans to look at changing those very words, but abandoned them after a public outcry, The Toronto Star reported.
