Canada’s Samir El-Mais wins boxing title at Commonwealth Games

Samir El-Mais gave Canada its first boxing gold of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, winning the title in the men’s heavy (91 kg) class.

El-Mais, of Windsor, Ont., defeated David Light of New Zealand in a split decision in the gold medal match.

Earlier in the day, Ariane Fortin of St. Nicholas, Que., earned a silver medal in the women’s 75 kg class. She lost in a split decision to England’s Savannah Marshall in the gold medal match.

It was Canada’s second women’s boxing medal in Glasgow, as the event makes its Commonwealth debut. Mandy Bujold of Kitchener, Ont., earned bronze in the 51 kg class earlier in the Games.

Canada earned three boxing medals total at the Commonwealth Games (one gold, one silver, one bronze).
