Don Cherry Denies Owning $8-Million Mississauga Mansion Up For Auction (UPDATED)

Don Cherry Slams 'Lying' Realtors: I'd Never Own A Home Like This

UPDATE: Don Cherry is denying that a Mississauga mansion up for auction this month used to be his home.

Realtor Sam McDadi is auctioning a Mississauga mansion he says was once occupied by the iconic CBC hockey commentator. But on Twitter Tuesday, Cherry denied ever owning the house.

Perhaps in an effort to shore up his credentials as a "regular guy," Cherry in particular objected to the idea that he would own such a luxurious home.

"It's ridiculous for anyone to think that I would live in a 10,500 square foot home," he tweeted.

Shortly after Cherry's tweets, Ritchies auction house retracted its press statement from earlier in the day that had announced the auction of the "Don Cherrty" house.

A spokesperson for Ritchies told HuffPost Canada the seller of the house "could not verify" claims the house had been previously owned by Cherry. The current owners, who have not been identified publicly, had reportedly been told when they bought the house it had previously been lived in by Cherry.

Original story follows below

An eight-bedroom Mississauga mansion once owned by Don Cherry is going up for auction.

The 10,500-square-foot house on a 2.5-acre lot overlooking the Credit River Ravine was one of Mississauga's first mega-mansions, says Sam McDadi, the real estate broker representing the property.

Ritchies will run the auction, which will take place at the property -- 2901 Mississauga Road -- on Aug. 17. The house had been originally listed for $7.8 million.

“This has been the home of many important Canadians,” McDadi said. “When it was first being built there would be line ups of cars around the corner to check out the legendary property.”

Christies will also be auctioning off some items from the home, as well as other items from other consigners. Among them will be a Ferrari 599 GTB, designer watches and handbags and "a fine selection of jewellery."
