Edmonton Lightning Touches Down, Catches Building On Fire (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

► Lightning Touches Down, Ignites Building

Here's some proof that lightning storms deserve our respect and our caution.

A home video shot during Wednesday evening's storm over Edmonton appears to show a building catch on fire after being struck by a lightning bolt.

The footage, taken from the 18th floor of a building in the area of 101 Avenue and 104 Street, shows a bolt of lightning make contact with a structure just northwest of the downtown core. After about a minute, there appears to be an explosion in the area.

It's not clear which building caught fire, but Edmonton Fire Rescue spokeswoman Laura Ruddock told the Edmonton Journal crews responded to 12 lightning strike calls during the storm, which lasted just over an hour and ended shortly after 9:30 p.m.

Ruddock told Global News at least one house and one garage were ignited by lightning strikes, but crews were able to quickly put out the fires.

Edmonton photographer Tim Lutic captured an amazing photo of one of the lightning strikes, posting the image to Twitter:

Another photographer captured the lightning in spectacular fashion. Beth van der Bij was photographing an engagement photo session and had her trigger finger set to 'lightning speed,' apparently.

The lightning was so abundant, several other Edmontonians also managed to snap photos of fork lightning:
