B.C. ferries diverted to assist with rescue off Galiano Island

BC Ferries confirms two of its vessels were diverted to assist with a rescue involving a small boat between Valdez and Galiano Islands tonight.

Ferries spokesperson Darin Guenette says the Coast Guard received a Mayday call and asked the Spirit of Vancouver Island to help out. The ferry was leaving Active Pass on its way to Tsawwassen when it was diverted.

The Coast Guard hovercraft the Siyay arrived on scene at 8:30 p.m. PT. according to BC Ferries. The Queen of Cowichan was also diverted from its trip to Horseshoe Bay.

Both B.C. ferry vessels are standing by at the scene of the rescue.
