Gabriel Gendreau-Martineau, 23, dies on B.C. fruit farm

Gabriel Gendreau-Martineau, a 23-year-old man from Ste-Agathe-de-Lotbinière, 50 kilometres south of Quebec City, was found dead at the bottom of a six-metre high stack of fruit boxes the same day he was scheduled to head home.

Gendreau-Martineau had spent the summer working at an Osoyoos fruit farm in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley and was scheduled to leave on Sept. 26.

The morning of his scheduled departure, a worker found Gendreau-Martineau dead at the base of a six-metre high pile of stacked fruit crates.

"Preliminary investigation suggests he was climbing the stack in the early morning hours of Sept. 26 when the top crate came loose, causing him to fall to the parking lot below," said a news release issued by the B.C. Coroners Service.

His death is being investigated by the coroner and the RCMP.

His funeral is set for Saturday, Oct. 4.
