Vancouver Main Street crash: Driver injured, parents killed

Vancouver police are investigating a fatal collision on Main Street near East 49th Ave. shortly after 8:30 p.m. PT Thursday.

Vancouver Police Const. Brian Montague says investigators are trying to determine what caused the driver to suddenly lose control of his 1993 Toyota minivan.

"[The] van was travelling south on Main Street. It went across 49th Avenue and as it did so it came into the oncoming lanes. It struck the curb in the northbound lanes, and struck five parked cars," Montague said.

Montague says the driver — a 38-year-old man — will survive his serious injuries, but his 82-year-old father and 74-year-old mother both died.

Police say it appears both parents were wearing seat-belts at the time of the crash, and Montague says there is no indication the couple's son was impaired by alcohol.

Collision analysts will examine the van for mechanical faults, and investigators will interview the son in an attempt to figure out what caused him to veer into oncoming traffic.
