Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement and the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, takes place this year from Oct. 3 to Oct. 4, 2014. But given that the start and end of the holiday also means the times during which people must fast, the more pertinent question is: which hours are which?
This year, Yom Kippur falls on a Friday, which means it coincides with Shabbat, the day of rest, so two traditions are being taken into account. For example, Shabbat candles are lit 18 minutes before sundown each week. And since sundown also marks the time when people go to synagogue for Kol Nidre (the specific service for the evening before Yom Kippur), meals must be eaten well beforehand.
Because of time and location differences, obviously the exact answer changes across the continent, but here are the pertinent details for the beginning and the end of Yom Kippur for biggest cities in Canada, according (unless otherwise noted) to Aish.com's comprehensive list.
