Fire ravages 9-unit apartment building in Montreal's east end

The residents of nine apartments were forced from their homes early Tuesday morning after a fire gutted a building in Montreal's east end.

The fire started around 2 a.m. ET in the basement of a building on Dorchester Street between Broadway and Laurendeau avenues.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to find flames coming out the back door.

They extinguished the fire within an hour.

Ten people were safely taken out of the building and were cared for by the Red Cross.

Only four of the nine smoke detectors inside the building worked.
