If you haven’t already heard, layering is as much a part of the joys of the fall season as pumpkin spice lattes are. And yes, we did just equate the intense thrill of drinking autumn's "It" beverage to dressing in fall layers.

Why is layering so important? It’s practical for one thing since the Canadian fall season is notorious for switching beween patio weather one day and parka weather the next.

From a style perspective, layering also adds depth to your outfit and playing with textures elevates any look from "meh" to impressive.

This fall 2014 season, it’s interesting to note that there are a couple new ways to layer (shirts tucked under dresses, skirts flowing over pants, etc.).

With that in mind, here are our favourite pieces that will up your layering game in a big way.

Tartan Blazer

15 Perfect Pieces For Fall Layering

Twik Tartan Blazer, $68 (Available at Simons)

Tartan is our print of choice for fall and the check pattern is so easy to coordinate with various layering pieces. Add a chambray shirt underneath and cuff the sleeves so the contrasting fabrics are visible.

Just because it’s sleeveless doesn’t mean you need to pack this dress up for the winter. Layer a great lightweight turtleneck or a fun collared shirt underneath à la Meghan Trainor.

Fur vest sightings are a sure sign fall has arrived. It’s also an excellent layering piece. Try a chunky cable knit sweater under a denim shirt and a great pair of leather pants to complete the look.

The skirt over pants look isn’t for everyone but if you give it a try, you might surprise yourself. This colour block cutaway skirt from J.Crew would be ideal for this type of layering with your choice of pant peeking out of the slits on either side.

Community Kratos Sweater, $110 (Available at Aritzia)

Oversized sweaters are made for layering. This poncho-style sweater is as cozy as it is versatile. On an extra chilly day, wear a patterned shirt underneath and pull the sleeves through for a little extra punch.

A savvy dresser will notice little details that’ll enhance their layering game. An interesting cuff on a shirt such as this textured top by Free People can be worn underneath a fairly plain sweater with the lace cuffs pulled out for added interest.

British label Superdry knows a thing or two about inclement weather. That’s why we love their pieces for layering. This puff gillet can be worn over not one but even two layers.

Have you noticed our abundant endorsement of the denim/chambray shirt yet? If not, there’s a reason we've mentioned this versatile item several times. Denim is always a welcome texture to mix and match with other pieces. It’s a great piece to layer under a sweater, cardigan or even unbuttoned over a lightweight top.

All hail the sweater dress, perhaps our favourite layering weapon of choice for fall. The possibilities are endless: toss a plush vest over top or add a fun pair of tights underneath to combat chilly weather. If the sweater dress in question is a crew or v-neck, make sure you add a collared shirt to the equation.

We recommend having an arsenal of scarves in your fall wardrobe as layering pieces. A colourful pattern scarf such as those made by Canadian brand Tilo can be just the piece that’s missing from your outfit. A pop of colour can go far and bonus points for wearing your scarf in unexpected ways.

Alexander Wang Biker Vest, $1340 (Available at Gravity Pope)

This is a statement layering piece if we’ve ever seen one and it comes from Alexander Wang. Wear something fairly neutral underneath because this biker vest shouldn’t have to compete with other busy pieces. Complete the look with a chunky scarf.

Essential layering piece alert! A simple pair of black tights is absolutely necessary for wearing under skirts and shorts. Always have a great pair of opaque tights in black and it doesn’t hurt to have other neutral shades like grey and even a patterned pair kicking around.

Pieces that happen to have unexpected zippers are great for layering because they provide an interesting opportunity to play with your clothes. We love this zip hem sweater that features a zipper on both sides.

Must we explain why everyone, men and women alike must own a crisp white button-up? A classic neutral oxford is one of the most versatile pieces you will own and often serves as the base of your layered ensembles.

You don’t have to be hitting up a holiday party to wear something sparkly. We love this playful sequin cardigan because you can easily dress it down by pairing it with a casual pant and something as simple as a long sleeve striped shirt. Wear it over a black sweater dress and knee high riding boots. The options are endless.
