An Edmonton teen who killed a cat and cooked parts of it in a ravine has been sentenced to 10 months in jail.
Zachary McKinnon, 19, is also banned from having pets for a decade and faces a three year probation period, reports the Edmonton Sun.
McKinnon pleaded guilty to animal cruelty in July.
The cat — named Pudge — belonged to family friends McKinnon had lived with for four months. On Feb. 13, McKinnon went back to the home to visit, and smuggled the cat out of the house in a backpack.
According to Global News, after McKinnon and two other teens stabbed the animal repeatedly with scissors and knives, they cooked parts of the cat in a skillet over a fire in the Mill Creek Ravine.
Crews responding to reports of a fire in the ravine came across the remains of the cat and a pair of bloody scissors, reports CTV News. The parts of the cat in the skillet were still warm.
The owner of the cat, Derek North, told the court his 16-year-old cat was his "best friend" and called the crime "unbelievable and unforgivable."
“This was a brutal and senseless killing of an innocent and defenceless animal,” provincial court Judge Donna Groves said, according to the Edmonton Journal. “These activities are so egregious, they fall into the category of unspeakable.”
McKinnon apologized to the family in court, reports CTV News.
"Nothing I did that day was okay… Nothing I did that day was right… I stand here and ask for your forgiveness and offer my deepest apologies."
Wednell Mack Mah, 18, and a 14-year-old boy who can’t be identified, also face charges of animal cruelty. Mah’s trial is scheduled for January.
