A Vancouver woman has won her fight to remove nude photos her ex-boyfriend posted on the Internet.

Anisa Salmi, 27, was shocked when her friend told her the pictures were on a revenge website called The Dirty. The American site is known for embarrassing women and men through pictures and comments posted by other people.

“I was mortified, just horrified, I didn’t know links like this existed and ... I felt violated,” Salmi told CBC News.

She immediately knew her ex-boyfriend uploaded the images because the two photos that appeared online had only been shared with him, said the news outlet.

"I knew this was his sick ploy of punishing me because I left. I learned he has done this in the past and I am sad to say he will do it again," Salmi wrote in an open letter outlining her experience.

The recent UBC grad is pursuing a career in occupational therapy and worries that online comments posted with the photos are hurting her chances for work, Global News reported.

She filed a complaint with the police, but because she willingly shared the photos, they told her no crime had been committed. She spent $2,000 to hire a company to compel The Dirty to erase links to her name and page, according to Global.

Salmi said she believes the online posts constitute defamation, breach of privacy, and copyright law violation.

The photos may have been taken down but Salmi continues to lobby for government action against cyber-bullying and cyber-libel. Internet experts say tabloid websites are taking advantage of laws that lag behind technology.

Salmi told CBC that she has received an outpouring of support from other women since she posted her letter online.

"This experience made me stronger. The person who did this to me wanted to put me down and he wanted to silence me and he wanted to make me feel ashamed of myself, and I want to let him know that I’m not ashamed and will not be silent and thank you for making me stronger and smarter and more resourceful," she told Global.
