Cortes Island crash sends car into water killing elderly driver

The long weekend has taken a tragic turn on Cortes Island.  A car crashed into the ocean Saturday night and despite the frantic efforts of rescue crews and family members on scene, they weren't able to save the man inside the vehicle.

The call came in just after 8 p.m. PT Saturday.

RCMP say an 87-year-old man was leaving the family residence after having dinner when he became confused and unintentionally drove his car into the ocean.

Police say family members and bystanders risked their own lives to try and save the man as rescue crews—including a Cormorant helicopter from CFB Comox rushed to the scene.

But it was too late.

The victim has since been identified as Howard Jarvis.
