A number of homes in the Elmwood-East Kildonan ward, where the former Winnipeg Jet is seeking re-election as a councillor, received a recorded phone message from Hull on Tuesday evening.
Steen's campaign provided CBC News with the audio of the recording on Wednesday.- ON MOBILE? Listen to the audio file on Soundcloud.
Steen said in addition to both of them being NHL alumni, he and Hull have worked together on events with the Amadeus Steen Foundation, a children's charity named after one of his sons.
Hull agreed to do the endorsement recording this past summer, Steen said.
"He offered before when we had a golf tournament, but he was just here this week and did an event for the foundation, and that's when he did the taping," Steen said.
Steen said he appreciates Hull's support, calling the retired NHLer a good man and a friend.
He added that he's not sure if the endorsement will help him when Winnipeggers go to the polls on Oct. 22, but he hopes so.
Carlos Sosa, who received the recorded message on Tuesday evening, said Hull talked "about how Thomas has good leadership skills and has been good for the area."
However, Sosa said the celebrity endorsement will not sway his vote.
Jason Schreyer, one of three men challenging Steen in Elmwood-EastKildonan, says he's not worried about Hull's backing of Steen.
If anything, Schreyer said the celebrity endorsement might draw more public attention to the civic election.
"I hope it encourages people to look at the issues and to consider what they're going to be doing next week. It matters," he said.
