Leon Hirtle lives simply.
A retired fisherman from Bells Island, N.S., he is single and childless. He has lived in the same house for 45 years, which he now shares with his brothers Eric and Everett.
He's happy with the way things are.
So when he found out that he won over $13 million in a Lotto 6/49 jackpot on Oct. 1, he took weeks to come out of obscurity and pick up the cheque, CTV News reported.
"I'm quite content with the way I am. If I had won $1,000, I'd be satisfied," Hirtle told the network as he received his winnings at the Bridgewater Curling Club on Thursday.
Hirtle isn't entirely sure what he'll do with the money, but "most of it will go to the family," he told The Chronicle Herald.
His niece Trudy Corkum described him as "calm and casual," and a nice man who would "do anything for you," CBC News reported.
The phone started ringing "off the hook" when news of his lottery winnings went public. Strangers have been calling and asking if they can share in the kitty.
Hirtle's family said they're going to be careful with the money, not even touching it until the hype dies down.
But if they were to touch it, his brother Eric would like to purchase a Hyundai Elantra because Leon has difficulty climbing out of his current car, an Accent, said The Chronicle Herald.
"But I don't want to tell him that," he told the newspaper.
Even with the money, Hirtle isn't finished with the lottery yet; CTV News reported that he plans on buying more tickets in future.
