Vancouver mayoral candidate Meena Wong has waded into the city's heated transit debate by proposing a universal "dollar a day" travel pass.
The Vancouver Pass, or V-Pass, would cost $365 per year, the COPE candidate announced in a Wednesday news release.
"To build a Vancouver everyone can afford, we need to reduce transit fares," Wong said. “A dollar a day Vancouver transit pass would save each transit rider $1,680 per year."
Wong says she wants all Vancouverites to have access to transit the way that post-secondary students do with the U-Pass, which costs $35 monthly as part of their student fees. Comparatively, a regular three-zone pass costs $170 each month.
If every working-age Vancouverite paid $30 per month for the V-Pass, it would generate $160 million for the transit system, Wong says. Residents would also have the opportunity to opt-out.
The Vancouver election is on Nov. 15.
