Oscar de la Renta Dead At 82 (PHOTOS)

Oscar de la Renta, the acclaimed fashion giant who was known for his red carpet dresses and ready-to-wear collections, has died at the age of 82, ABC News confirmed Monday.

Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 1932, the fashion designer was mentored early on by Vogue editor Diana Vreeland and designed dresses for Elizabeth Arden's custom-made clothing line.

Launching his own label in 1965, he would go on to become one of the biggest names in fashion. He was among the first couturiers to dress Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and he designed many red carpet dresses, including Sandra Bullock's gown at the 2004 Oscars and Sarah Jessica Parker's custom gown at the 2014 Met Gala.

More recently, he designed Amal Clooney's wedding dress.

He had been diagnosed with cancer in 2006, ABC News reported.
