"We're looking ahead but looking back," Kimberley Newport-Mimran said in a backstage interview at Toronto's World MasterCard Fashion Week on Monday. "I did a nod to the '70s, but definitely in a really modern way which is a little bit of a departure for me."
Newport-Mimran described the collection as an assembly of "strong pieces for strong girls" with an emphasis on pants and blouses for the season.
As rock anthems blared for the speakers, models strutting on platform heels showcased fringe-adorned vests, skirts and dresses, ruched halter-style bathing suits and slick jumpsuits. Tie-neck tops, fur-adorned blouses, wide-legged culottes and high-waisted flared pants were also in the mix. While black was the featured colour in the new line, there were several splashes of richly hued prints in the form of painterly blooms and floral and paisley prints.
In addition to unveiling her new line, Newport-Mimran also recently marked the launch of her new e-commerce site, including a virtual concept of her label's flagship location in Toronto's Yorkville neighbourhood.
"I love the digital platform of actually having a bricks-and-mortar experience online, and it was how to bridge not losing the shopping experience but being able to do it from anywhere," she said.
Earlier this year, Newport-Mimran made her debut on The Shopping Channel showcasing a curated selection of goods from her downtown Toronto boutique.
"The more we can get the brand into the hands of the consumer that loves it, the better it is and the bigger that we can be."
