Major fire at Laval car recycling plant darkens sky with thick smoke

Provincial environmental officials are on the scene of an overnight fire at a vehicle parts recycling plant in Laval.

The fire started at about 1 a.m. and burned for hours, sending thick clouds of smoke into the air.

By daybreak, the plumes of smoke could be seen for kilometres.

No one was hurt in the fire.

Fire officials said they did not believe the smoke posed a risk to the general public, but provincial environmental officials were on the scene to monitor the situation and ensure no dangerous toxins escaped into the air or water.
