Is there anything Tom Hanks can't do? His career spans a swath of roles from the light-hearted rom-coms with Meg Ryan to Oscar-nominated dramas like "Captain Philips" and "Saving Mr. Banks". But despite plenty of accolades over the years, Hanks hasn't allowed the fame go to his head as he's always game to poke fun of himself on late-night TV.
Well, now James Franco gets his shot to channel his best Hanks impression in his webseries, Making A Scene. But if there's anything as diverse as Hanks' roles or greater than his ability to make us laugh, it has to be his lesser-known quirks.
Here's a few facts you might not have known about one of Hollywood's most veritable actors.
If Hanks was better at math, he'd be an astronaut. Still, he has something most wannabe-astronauts don't: an asteroid named after him. Astronomers in Arizona named the hunk of space debris "12818 Tomhanks" for his role in "Apollo 13".
After staring in the TV show "Bossom Buddies", Hanks made a guest appearance on "Happy Days". He later became fast friends with director Ron Howard and that led to his big role in the movie "Splash". Yup, that's Hanks trying to fight the Fonz.
Hanks got his first start performing Shakespeare at The Great Lakes Theater In Cleveland, Ohio back in 1977. He spent three summers there, returning multiple times later on for fundraisers when the playhouse was in financial trouble.
He packed on the weight for his role of Jimmy Dugan in "A League of Their Own".
His weight loss was so successful, Matthew McConaughey called up Hanks for his weight loss advice during the filming of "Dallas Buyers Club".
It's a distant relationship, but it's there. Hanks is Lincoln's third cousin, four times removed via the president's mother, Nancy Hanks.
He can act, he can sing and he can dance! Hanks made his Broadway debut with "Lucky Guy" in 2013. His performance later earned him a Tony Award nomination.
The man has over 100 of them and even penned an op-ed about them in The New York Times.
Hanks was one of three people to produce the Canadian-American cult favourite.
He coined the term "The Five Timers' Club", a title only available to those who've hosted the SNL at least five times. He joins other names like Steve Martin, Paul Simon, Chevy Chase, among others.
