We hate to say it, but the snow and cold are not over yet, Alberta.
Calgary's warm and sunny fall came to an abrupt end Sunday morning, when the temperature dropped and snow began to fly.
More than 20 centimetres fell on parts of southern Alberta as of Monday morning, and in Calgary, the temperature fell from 13 C on Saturday to -10 C on Sunday.
The snow is expected to continue until Tuesday, with another few centimetres forecast to fall over the next two days. Temperatures will also drop further, with a windchill of -29 C predicted for Calgary Monday.
"It's definitely a lot colder today than it was yesterday and it's going to stay that way for the better part of the week," Jesse Wager, a lead meteorologist with Environment Canada, told the Calgary Herald.
The combination of snow and cold have made commuting a nightmare, and City of Calgary road crews are out clearing main roads and putting down anti-icing agents.
CTV News reports Calgary police had to block off several streets in Bridgeland Sunday because the roads were so slippery.
Calgary police say they responded to more than 320 collisions by 8 a.m. Monday morning, with more than 70 of those involving injuries.
City roads spokeswoman Anna Blaxley told CBC News drivers should have a full tank of gas before heading out on the roads, and to leave lots of space between cars while driving.
511 Alberta says most of the main highways around Calgary are either partially or completely covered in snow and ice.
RCMP were responding to two major collisions on the QEII Highway north and south of Airdrie Monday morning.
Edmonton police officers were also busy over the weekend after the first major snowfall of the season hit the capital city Saturday.
According to Global Edmonton, police responded to 231 collisions.
