SAIT Play Rehearsal Could Have Been Behind Heard 'Gunshots'

CALGARY - Police are investigating whether noise from a technical rehearsal for a play about World War One may have sparked a lengthy lockdown at a big Calgary college.

A section of SAIT Polytechnic was closed for about two hours Wednesday evening after police got a call from an employee about several loud bangs that sounded like gunshots.

Officers cleared students from the area, but found no trace of a gunman or shell casings.

The play is being staged at the nearby Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, where a theatre group has permission to use blanks in the performance.

Police say misinformation about the call that spread rapidly on social media did not help their investigation.

Sgt. Cory Ma, a police spokesman, says it led to a sort of telephone game. (CHQR)
