Dion Phaneuf’s crushing hit angers Evgeni Malkin

Toronto Maple Leafs' defenceman Dion Phaneuf’s crushing hit on Penguins winger Patric Hornqvist nearly paid off Friday night at Air Canada Centre.

The Leafs, down 2-1 to the Penguins late in the third period, were searching for the equalizer when they caught a break.

Hornqvist redirected a long pass into Toronto’s end a moment before getting crushed into the boards by Phanuef.

Irate Penguins teammate Evegni Malkn took exception and charged Phanuef. No punches were thrown and the scuffle was quickly broken up.

But Malkin took an extra two-minute roughing penalty in the process with 2:14 remaining, giving Toronto one final opportunity to the tie the game and send it into overtime.

That almost cost the Penguins as it took an alert stick save by backup Thomas Greiss in the dying seconds — with the Leafs on a 6-on-4 advantage after pulling Jonathan Bernier — to preserve the 2-1 victory.
