Suspects tried to yank the bank machine out of a Caisse populaire Desjardins on Notre-Dame Street East by attaching a cable to the device and pulling it out with a vehicle around 10:40 p.m.Monday night.
The bank machine got lodged in the door and fell over at the entrance causing the thieves to give up.
They left without taking any money from the ATM.
The credit union where the ATM is located is currently under renovation.
Employees with the armoured truck company Garda World managed to sit the machine upright and emptied it of its money.
Police believe this robbery attempt may be linked to a fire that was deliberately set in the neighbourhood earlier in the evening.
Investigators believe the suspects started that fire as a diversion.
