Whistler opening early as temperatures perfect for snowmaking

A blast of below average temperatures has allowed Whistler Blackcomb to move up their season opening date to Saturday, Nov. 22.

An early snowfall at higher elevations, followed by perfect conditions for snowmaking, means the ski resort can open Whistler Mountain five days ahead of schedule — with five lifts running.

"Our snowmaking team … has converted over 60 million gallons of water into snow over the past few weeks,” Doug MacFarlane, Director of Mountain Operations at Whistler Blackcomb said in a statement.

"And with more natural snow in the forecast for later this week, it should be a fun opening weekend."

Ski rentals and ski school will both be open, as will the Whistler Village and Creekside gondolas.

Blackcomb Mountain will open, as originally scheduled, on Nov. 27.
