An employee who oversees parking at the University of Lethbridge has been charged with stealing cash out of the parking metres he oversees.

Richard Douglas Lutwick, parking manager for the U of L, was charged with theft over $5,000 Tuesday, after a police investigation found more than $60,000 was taken from campus parking metres over nearly a two year period, between December 2012 and November 2014.

According to police, the accused has worked at the university for 18 years and has held his current position for 10 years.

Police say they received a tip in October about suspicious banking activity, which led the Economic Crimes Unit to launch an investigation.

Lutwick, 58, is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 28.
