Quebec daycare fees to rise

The Quebec government is putting an end to the universal fee structure for its publicly-funded daycare system.

The government will have parents pay on a sliding scale according to their household income.

The current rate of $7.30 will remain in effect. But when families prepare their annual income tax declarations, those who make more money will have to pay an additional amount.

Families with a gross income of less than $50,000 will continue to pay the base amount of $7.30

The fee will climb to $20 per day for families whose gross annual income is more than $150,000.

Parents will only pay the base rate for a third child who is in a daycare at the same time as two siblings.

Fees will be indexed starting in 2016.

Families Minister Francine Charbonneau justified the changes saying they were needed to guarantee the viability of the program.
