Worker dies after brick wall collapses in Calgary, officials investigating

CALGARY - Alberta officials are investigating a second workplace death in Calgary this week.

A government spokesman says employees with NorCal Construction were dismantling a brick building in the northeast part of the city.

A wall collapsed on a male worker and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 30-year-old employee with Insituform Technologies suffered head injuries Tuesday when he was hit by a piece of machinery at a jobsite.

James Ladino of Edmonton died in hospital the next day.

Investigators with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety continue to investigate both deaths.

Spokesman Brookes Merritt says there have been 120 workplace deaths in the province so far this year, compared to 188 in 2013.
