Austerity marches underway in Montreal, Quebec City

Thousands of protesters are expected in the streets of Montreal, Quebec City and elsewhere in the province in another day of demonstrations against government austerity.

The last austerity protest, held on Halloween, saw thousands of students, union supporters, activists and others marching through downtown Montreal.

The protesters are angry about austerity measures introduced by Philippe Couillard's government, including fee restructuring for the province's subsidized daycare program, and cuts to medical care, social services and education.

Today's protests are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

In Montreal, protesters will depart from Place du Canada at the corner of Peel Street and René-Lévesque Boulevard and in Quebec City, from the Plains of Abraham.
