Multiple accidents and road closures due to ice and snow

A serious crash involving multiple vehicles has closed Highway 1 near Gaglardi Way in Burnaby.

Traffic has been backed up ever since the accident shortly after 8 a.m. PT.

DriveBC says the closure is due to a police incident and estimates the highway will reopen by 2 p.m. PT.

Meanwhile, Highway 5 at the Coquihalla Summit is also closed due to a collision and not expected to open until 5 p.m. PT.

The accident is one of several collisions due to snow and ice on the roads from an overnight snowfall.

Early Saturday police reported a collision on the Brunette Highway in New Westminster. The eastbound off-ramp at Highway 1 and United Boulevard was also temporarily closed due to accidents caused by black ice.

Highway 99 at Highway 91 in Delta was closed for a few hours Saturday because of accidents also caused by icy roads.

Police are advising motorists to take road conditions into account and drive a little slower while the winter weather lasts.
