St. Mary's Polish Church in Sydney was destroyed in a fire Saturday.
Cape Breton Regional Police got the call for help at 12:18 p.m.
Neighbours and parishioners watched as flames tore through the building. Two hours later, the church was reduced to rubble.
Police urged people to stay away from the church on Wesley Street, as well as all side streets, as firefighters battled the blaze.
A number of fire departments helped or were on standby.
