Young man dead in west Quebec crash after driver avoids deer

An 18-year-old man is dead and a teenage girl is fighting for her life after a crash north of Montebello, Que., as police believe the driver was trying to avoid a deer.

Quebec provincial police say the crash happened on Route 323 in Lac-des-Plages, Que., on Saturday night.

The driver lost control and the vehicle rolled over after he tried to avoid a deer on the road, police said.

An 18-year-old man sitting in the backseat was pronounced dead at the scene. A 17-year-old girl, who was sitting next to the victim, suffered life-threatening injuries and she was rushed to hospital.

The driver, who is 17, and another 17-year-old boy sitting in the passenger seat suffered minor injuries.

Police said speed and alcohol did not factor into the crash and no charges will be laid.
