A Coast Mountain Bus driver has been charged with assault after an alleged run-in with an angry skateboarder who missed his bus in Burnaby.
The driver of the 97 B-Line was pulling away from the Lougheed SkyTrain Station with a full bus last Tuesday morning, Unifor union local president Nathan Woods told The Province.
According to witness Rebecca Burnette, a man ran up and knocked on the bus doors to try to get it to stop, reported Global News.
The driver followed Coast Mountain's policy not to open doors on moving buses, and that's when the man banged his skateboard against the front doors, breaking the glass on them, said Woods.
Burnette told Global the bus driver then pulled over and assaulted the would-be passenger.
But Woods claims that the bus driver, who has more than 25 years of experience, was not violent and instead used a bear hug to detain the 20-year-old suspect.
“It wasn’t anything more, from our perspective, than a transit operator trying to protect the better interest of the bus, the passengers, and feeling that he was doing the right thing in trying to detain the person for the police," Woods told The Province.
Burnaby RCMP and Coast Mountain Bus are doing their own investigations, said News 1130.
Transit Police are investigating the man for mischief, said Global.
