Police have found the body of a child in the trunk of a car in Surrey, B.C., and arrested the female owner of the car.
Sgt. Jennifer Pound, media relations officer of the RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said the woman is believed to be the child's mother.
Shortly after noon PT Wednesday, Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a "suspicious circumstance" in the 13900 block of 35A Avenue of Surrey. Police initially believed it was a minor motor vehicle accident when they found a car stuck in a ditch in a rural area.
The body of child was then discovered in the trunk of the car.
The homicide unit has called for an autopsy to confirm the cause of the death, but police do not believe the child died as a result of the car accident.
Police have not yet released the name of the woman under arrest or the gender and identity of the child. They believe both the mother and child are from Surrey and are working to identify next of kin.
