City of Gatineau to get new birthing centre in 2016

The city of Gatineau will be getting a new birthing centre in 2016 after the province of Quebec announced $3.1 million in funding.

The l'Outaouais birthing centre will replace Centre des Aines de Gatineau, which opened 20 years ago.

The province says it wants to encourage Quebec women to stay in the province when they give birth.

According to health officials in west Quebec, about one quarter of women who live there give birth in Ottawa, which costs the province money in transfer payments to Ontario.
