Amrik Virk moved out of advanced education ministry in B.C. government shuffle

Beleaguered B.C. government minister Amrik Virk has been shuffled out of his post as advanced education minister to minister of technology, innovation and citizens' services.

The news comes on the same day that a report into the pay scandal at Kwantlen Polytechnic University was revised to show that Virk was aware of secret bonuses paid to new executives.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong called for the report to be revised last month after the provincial New Democrats released emails sent from Virk's RCMP email account that suggested he was more involved in the hiring of the institution's former vice-president Anne Lavack than previously thought.

At that time, NDP Leader John Horgan said Virk should be dumped from cabinet.

"Mr. Virk has demonstrated bad judgment not once, not twice, but three times and it's probably time for him to get out of cabinet," he said.

Virk will be replaced effective immediately by Andrew Wilkinson, who was appointed the minister of technology, innovation and citizens' services in 2013.
