YVR Christmas rush the busiest yet

It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas at Vancouver International Airport (YVR), where 60,000 visitors per day are expected over this weekend and next.

It's shaping up to be the busiest month in the airport's history — topping off its busiest year ever, according to the Airport Authority's director of customer care, Reg Krake.

"In 2013 our passenger numbers were 17.97 million, just shy of 18 million," Krake said.

"So we're actually going to leapfrog 18 million this year and land somewhere in the low 19 million — we're estimating about 19.4 million."

Those heading out of the city Friday cite that old chestnut — the weather — as their main reason for taking to the skies, with numbers up for travellers to Hawaii and Mexico.

Many others are braving the mayhem to get back to family and loved ones for the holiday season.

Krake says extra staff are on hand to handle the rush, but passengers should give themselves extra time — and have a little more patience — when travelling at this time of year.
