Families face Christmas without social assistance

Some families around Ontario are facing a Christmas without their monthly social assistance cheques because of continued problems with the province's new computer system.

The Social Assistance Management System (SAMS) has been a headache for thousands of people who depend on payments from Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program since it debuted in November.

Teresa Munnery and her husband are on disability, but their cheques never came this month and no one who can help is taking their calls.

"They just say there's a glitch. We're part of the glitch," Munnery told CBC News.

"We would like to have a turkey dinner, a dinner, on Christmas just like everybody else," she said. "I would like to show up and be able to give my grandson some presents just like the next person."
