Teen hit by car driven by Abbotsford off-duty police officer dies

A 14-year-old boy who was struck by a car driven by an off-duty Abbotsford police officer Friday night has died of his injuries.

The Independent Investigations Office, which provides civilian oversight of serious police incidents said the teen was airlifted to hospital immediately following the accident, but died of his injuries.

The collision happened at 6:15 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Mill Lake Road and West Bourquin in Abbotsford, B.C.

The driver of the 2009 Mazda 3, who was identified as an off-duty Abbotsford police officer, remained at the scene.

The IIO was then called to conduct the investigation.

"IIO investigators were deployed to multiple locations and spent the night identifying and interviewing potential witnesses, canvassing for video surveillance and seizing physical evidence from the scene," said IIO spokesperson Kellie Kilpatrick.

Kilpatrick said investigators believe there were other witnesses to the accident and are asking anyone who saw anything to contact the IIO infoline at 1-855-446-8477.
