Dozens of firefighters shut down one of the town’s main intersections to canvas passersby for money for Mathis Gagnon, 8.

Gagnon’s parents, Karine Desrochers-Gauthier, 32, and Patrick Gagnon, 37, died along with his siblings, Laurie, 4, and Felix, 2, when their apartment caught fire on Dec. 23.

Mathis was found in critical condition. He awoke from a coma on Christmas Day to discover his family had died.

Now the community of around 5,000 people is coming together to raise money for Mathis.

Volunteers asked drivers to stop and help. Driver after driver rolled down their car windows, sometimes giving fistfuls of cash.

One anonymous donor gave a $5,000 cheque.

Firefighters said it’s small comfort for a boy who lost everything, but they hope their efforts will help Mathis rebuild his life.

Once he’s released from hospital, he will live with his aunt.
