Man shot and killed by transit police in Surrey

A man was shot and killed by transit police outside the Surrey Central Skytrain station around 8 a.m. PT Sunday.

B.C.'s Independent Investigations Office said Surrey RCMP were responding to a report of a man with a knife inside a Safeway store at 104 Avenue and the King George Boulevard.

Spokeswoman Kellie Kilpatrick said her office has been told the man was stabbing himself inside the store, but those reports have not yet been confirmed.

Kilpatrick said the man left the store. She  said he was shot by a transit police officer outside the nearby Surrey Central Skytrain station.

The man was rushed to hospital, but the IIO said shortly after 10 a.m. PT that he had died of his injuries.
