Meaghan Rath, Montreal actress, enjoys New Girl success

It’s been a landmark year for Montreal actress Meaghan Rath, who made the jump from a cult series to American sitcoms.

Rath, a native of Montreal West, has been using a stretch of downtime over the holidays to reflect on a busy 2014.

For the fourth year in a row, Rath played one of the leads in the popular science fiction series Being Human.

"I was 23 when I started that show," Rath said.

"And booking that show was one of those moments in my life that is so rare. When I saw the role, I was like, 'This is me.' I was literally everything. I was a ghost, a witch, a werewolf. I was a time traveller at one point."

The show earned her a loyal following, with an online community of Rath devotees numbering in the thousands.

Headed to Los Angeles

When the series ending earlier this year, Rath got booked for a role in Cinemax's action-drama, Banshees, and ABC's Secrets & Lies, starring Ryan Phillipe and Juliet Lewis. She also played a lead role in Montreal indie film, Three Night Stand.

Then she landed a recurring role in Zooey Deschanel's hit sitcom on FOX, New Girl.

"I feel like all the stuff that I've been doing this year, I've been in that position where I'm coming on the set on someone else's show, and I sort of have to prove myself," Rath said.

And the changes keep coming. Soon Rath will be settling in Los Angeles.

"When I think about moving there and having to be the new person -- not only on set, but in my life... that's kind of been the theme of the year," she said.
