Ernest Abugov to conduct his last performance of The Nutcracker

There's a big change coming to the landmark show of the National Ballet of Canada.

After 42 years at the helm, the world-renowned dance company's stage manager, Ernest Abugov, will conduct his final performance of The Nutcracker this weekend.

Abugov is responsible for keeping the 300 or so dancers, stagehands and technicians involved in The Nutcracker moving day in and day out.

"The dancers get reviewed, the designers get reviewed but the stage managers never get reviewed," says senior ballet master Peter Ottmann. "Ernie has given stellar performances decade after decade after decade."

Abugov will stay on with the dance company until June before retiring.
