A new campaign by French fashion house Céline has us falling in love with legendary American writer Joan Didion all over again.
The ad, shot by German photographer Juergen Teller, captures the 80-year-old literary tour de force, known for her quiet ferocity, looking both elegant and austere.
And it’s amazing.
Wearing all black, Didion is seated on a couch, eyes hidden behind a pair of oversized black sunglasses. A thin black sweater covers her frail figure. And a large brass pendant rests on her chest, hanging on thin black string.
The campaign draws renewed attention to Didion’s legacy in a year destined to celebrate her storied career.
Praised by Obama as “one of the most celebrated writers of her generation,” Didion is slated to star in a documentary directed by her nephew Griffin Dunne titled “We Tell Ourselves Stories In Order To Live.”
Filmmakers say they’re aiming for a release date in late 2015.
Céline’s Spring 2015 line, designed by famously reclusive British designer Phoebe Philo, has earned praise from the fashion world for its balance of sleek asymmetrical cuts and fun ‘70s floral inspirations.
Vogue described the label’s new collection as, “a hint of New Age spirituality, and a lot of genuine desperation to go off-grid and live a bit” with “a touch of nutty eccentricity.”
