You may want to add eating more whole grains to your list of New Year's resolutions.

A major study by Harvard University found that a diet high in whole grains, such as brown rice, popcorn, oats and quinoa, may be key to living a longer and healthier life.

The Harvard researchers tracked the health and diets of more than 118,000 adult men and women from 1984 until 2010. All participants were healthy when they joined the study. By the end of the study, more than 26,000 participants had died.

The researchers discovered that participants who ate at least 28 grams of whole grains per day reduced their risk of death over the course of the study by 5 per cent, and their risk of death from heart disease in particular by 9 per cent. There was no change in the risk of death from cancer.
