A dash-cam video capturing a near collision between a pair of transport trucks just north of Saskatoon is garnering attention online, with thousands of views on one site alone.
Randy Rein, an Alberta-based driver with Waylon Transport, was behind the wheel of the truck with the dashboard-mounted camera. He had to do some quick thinking on Highway 16, where it intersects with 71st Street, when another semi-truck attempted to cross the road.
"It's just one of those situations where you've got to pay attention and keep your head," Reine said during an interview with CBC's Saskatoon Morning. "I was on the brakes the whole time, but I turned with him instead of running into the side of him."
Reine credits the manoeuvre with saving his life. It was one of many he learned from his his father, who was also a truck driver.
"My dad taught me years ago, different things to do in different situations, and one of them was what I did," he said.
After both vehicles had come to a stop, the video shows Reine hopping out of his truck to speak with the other driver.
"I said, 'Do you realize I almost broadsided you at 110?' and his answer I can't put on the radio," Reine said.
He hopes the video reminds drivers to stay alert on the road.
"If you're not paying attention when you're driving ... things can go sour very, very fast."
