Ice climbers: 1 dead, 2 missing north of Pemberton

One ice climber has reportedly been killed and a search is underway for two more who are missing in the mountains north of Pemberton, B.C.

Whistler RCMP say they first learned of the incident around 1:30 a.m. PT and have yet to access the remote backcountry location near Joffre Peak, which is part of Mount Matier.

According to police the climbers were part of a larger group that had plans to rendezvous at the end of the day, but when the climbers didn't arrive the skiers went looking for them.

"From the information that we have it appears that one climber may have suffered a fall, while the other two are unaccounted for," said a statement released by Sgt. Rob Knapton.

RCMP and Pemberton Search and Rescue are coordinating a search for the missing climbers this morning.

The two missing climbers are described as experienced and in their 30s, but none of the names of those involved have been released by police.
