Trial begins for man accused of drunk driving in deadly crash

A trial has begun for a man accused of drunk driving in a head-on crash that left a father and daughter dead on a summer weekend several years ago.

Jayantha Wijeratne, 49, and his 16-year-old daughter, Eleesha, died after their minivan was struck by a GMC Envoy in August 2012.

Antonette Wijeratne is the wife and mother of the two deceased. She was also in the minivan when it was hit. She lived, but spent three months in hospital with rib, pelvic and hip fractures.

The family was just 10 minutes from home at the time of the crash. They had been returning from a trip to Florida.

Sabastian Prosa, 21, faces a dozen charges in connection with the incident, including two counts of impaired driving causing death.

None of the charges have been proven in court.
