'Only in Surrey': Mayor, businesses want Facebook page taken down

The Surrey Board of Trade is standing by its calls for a Facebook page to be taken down, saying it paints a negative picture of the city.

The Only In Surrey page anonymously posts photos taken around Surrey, showing people sleeping in public spaces, overloaded shopping carts, used condoms, women the site presumes to be sex workers and other negative images.

The page has been around for a few years, but recently garnered attention with an editorial in The Now Newspaper, which said calls by Mayor Linda Hepner, and Surrey Board of Trade CEO Anita Huberman to have the page taken down were "misguided."

Huberman hasn't backed down.

"Everyone has a right to say what they want, or post what they want, through social media outlets, but I think if this person who is running this Facebook page really is a concerned citizen of Surrey, they need to be much more proactive in terms of offering solutions," she told The Early Edition's Rick Cluff.

Huberman said the person behind the site shouldn't be anonymous, and suggested they attend community meetings, rather than just highlighting problems.
