Reto Berra becomes 11th goalie in AHL history to record a goal

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Reto Berra became the 11th goaltender in American Hockey League history to be credited with a goal on Friday — but just the seventh to shoot the puck into the opposition's net.

Berra's empty-net goal helped the Lake Erie Monsters to a 5-1 victory over the Chicago Wolves.

With Chicago goaltender Matt Climie on the bench for an extra attacker late in regulation, Berra shot the puck the length of the ice and into the vacated net to give Lake Erie a 4-1 lead at 18:34 of the third period.

Berra was making his Monsters debut after joining the team on a conditioning assignment from the Colorado Avalanche earlier this week. He also stopped 20 of 21 shots to earn the victory.

Former NHL netminder Darcy Wakaluk was the first goalie to be credited with an AHL goal. It happened on Dec. 5, 1987 while facing the Utica Devils as a member of the Rochester Americans. The last goalie to register a goal on the scoresheet was Chris Holt of the Binghamton Senators on Mar. 19, 2010 against Rochester.
